Sentence Variety Unit

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am planning a unit for 7th graders on sentence variety - simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. This is not the first year that they will have had simple and compound sentences since our state requires them to be tested on the concepts in 6th grade as well.

I'm looking for any suggestions on what to include for a 15 minute Presentation lesson to give an overview on sentence structure without getting bogged down on subject/predicate/conjuction diagrams.

I don't want to talk down to my imaginary students, but I also don't want to lose them in verbal complexity.

Search the grades 4-8 board for Unseen's Task Cards! She just created some task cards for combining sentences this week that should give you some great ideas for your lessons. They will definitely have to have a foundation in identifying phrases and clauses before you can move to compound or complex sentences. Then you can work on combining sentences and identifying whether the new sentence is compound or complex.

The Simpsons Teach Sentences. There's a fun powerpoint you can download.
