What classroom theme are you using?

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Last year my class and I really enjoyed our classroom theme: KLC- Kids Learning Community (a play on Professional Learning Community). I loved this theme because it really helped to nourish our classroom environment into a place where we all help each other learn. For example, during independent work, the kids could KLC whisper to each other if they needed help or clarification. My group did a great job with this priviledge and it allowed me more time for small-differentiated instruction. We also had a lot of fun with the theme because we played KLC games all the time--- team builders. At the end of the year it was one of their favorite things from fifth grade.

Even though I love the theme, I want to try out a new classroom theme this year. That's the beauty of being a teacher--- trying new things every year.

What classroom theme are you going to do or have you done? I would love to hear any and all ideas--- silly, mature, tied to picture book, inspired by a bulletin board set... ANYTHING!

Thank you!

My theme this year

is All the Places You Go. I am basing it on the book with the idea that we are traveling through our learning this year. When the kids come the the first day I will have a "plane ticket" for them to find on a bulletin board. Then they will have a number on it to find their seat. I also will have a passport for them. Each section of the classroom is going to be a "place." For instance, the Reading area is going to be "Treasure Island" because I always tell them books are treasures. Our math area is going to be Math Mountain. The writing area will be A Writing Wilderness.
I also bought them little journals that say, All the places you go. Still working out some of the details for this theme!

and have guitars everywhere - one for classroom news, reading that rocks, writing that rocks etc. My reading center has a guitar rug and brightly colored round pillows. With the craze over Rock Band, I figured it was good for this age, and they love it! Oriental Trading has a bunch of stuff for this theme.

Going Green

Our theme this year is 'going green'. We are using it not just for beautiful, calming decoarations but also to work on community involvement. It will tie into science and social studies (ecology and human interaction with nature) as well as provide opportunities for community service. It is also a way for us to integrate more technology and focus on cutting our paper use at school.

I think that I am going to do a minute to win it theme. I will use the games from NBC.com to reward students for good behavior at the end of the week. I am not sure how else to use the theme, but I think that the kids will really enjoy it!

How exactly are the themes incorporated throughout the year? Is it mostly in the way the classroom is decorated and labeled?

I know a poem you might like...

"Books are keys to wisdom's treasure;
Books are gates to lands of pleasure;
Books are paths that upward lead;
Books are friends. Come, let us read."
~ Emilie Poulsson
