Hello all...

I have recently started teaching self-contained 8th grade, this is after having taught only 3rd and 4th grade. Anyhoo....we have just begun our Poetry unit. I have discovered after grading our first assessment that my students can recognize metaphors and similes, but have trouble identifying what is being compared. I was hoping you all might have some suggestions.

Oh, and you should know the majority of my students' first language is Spanish. They are no longer identified as ELL, but all were in the past. I am thinking this is part of the challenge with figurative language.

Any other ideas to make our Poetry Unit more fun would be greatly appreciated!

I just read and listened to "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" with my 6th graders. There are only 2 similies but many metaphors and exampes of alliteration and personification. We highlighted what was being compared and then made up some more...it seemed to click and they had a lot of fun.
