27 weeks and dilated...

My DD called today. She is 27 weeks into a very uneventful pregnancy (her first) and she is dialted to 1. They sent her to the hospital for a shot to help DGD's lungs develop in case, and she'll have another tomorrow. I'm so scared for her. She's 4 hours away and I offered to come anytime she wants but for now she says she's fine. I'm just so scared for them both! DSIL is great, and I know he will call me if he thinks I need to come out, as he has before.

Any positive stories of situations like this? I was 5 days overdue and had to be induced with her and had a c section with DD #2 so this is new to me. They don't seem to think it's an incompetent cervix but more likely because she's so young (21) and thin.

Praying like crazy here.

my old P's daughter had a similar situation with her daughter. She dilated at 27 weeks, took the shot, went on strict bed rest and delivered a perfectly healthy little girl 8 weeks later. Take a deep breath and be supportive. They have come so far with prenatal and nicu care in the last few years.

I don't have any advice either, but like Zephie said there is a lot they can do nowadays for babies born prematurely. Praying that baby waits a bit longer and that both mama and baby will be healthy!

My oldest daughter was born at 26w4d, weighed 2 lbs 1.4 oz, and was 13.5 inches long. I had previously lost our son at 19w6d when my water broke due to an incompetent cervix and we were monitoring my cervix very closely in my pregnancy with my daughter. I ended up having to have an emergency cerclage at 18 weeks and then I was on bedrest until I delivered her. We had a rough couple of months between the cerclage and her delivery. I believe I had steriod shots around 24 weeks to develop her lungs (It's been a long time, so the details are a little fuzzy on this side of it!). She sounded like a little kitten when she was delivered, but she was alive! Many at that gestation end up on the ventilator, but she was lucky and was able to get by with the CPAP. She did become dependent on the oxygen though and ended up coming home on it. She spent 68 days in the NICU. Overall, I consider her a success story. She does have asthma and ADD, but both of those run in our family, so I can't say it is a preemie issue. She will be 16 next month and is now about 5'8" tall. Unless you know her story, you would never guess she was a 2 lb preemie at birth.

In my subsequent pregnancies, we did a preventative cerclage. I did still have issues and had to do bedrest, but those pregnancies made it to 38 and 36 weeks.

I am sorry to hear this and know that you all must be very worried and stressed. Of course everyone wants a healthy, full term baby and at 27 weeks the baby would have to spend quite some time in the NICU. I looked it up on several different sites and the chances of survival are about 90% at 27 weeks. I have a friend/former co-worker whose grandson was born 6 years ago at 26 weeks. He weighed a little over 2 pounds and was in the NICU for 11 weeks I believe. He came home healthy and is a very healthy, intelligent and active 6 year old. He needed to wear glasses for awhile, but that was the extent of any longer term problems.

This is a stressful time. The doctors know what are doing. My DD’s water broke at 29 weeks. Was in hospital on bed rest taking meds to help baby’s lungs etc. Miss Cora was born at 31 weeks and was in NICU 41 days. She is now a healthy sassy 19 month old. Sending positive thoughts to all.

My daughter was born at 24 weeks and weighed 1lb, 6 oz. she was in the hospital until her original due date. She was so tiny and we were so worried about her outcomes. She’s 12 now and is currently sitting beside me reading A Treasury of Roald Dahl. She is doing fine — when she isn’t pulling some oreteen attirude lol. Best wishes for your dd and baby.

I have a friend whose baby was born at 25 weeks. He's still in the hospital and almost 4 months old now, but he's doing great!
