I've been in menopause for over 10 years! When I was younger I used to blast the heat. Now I'm so hot all the time! It's 32 deg and I'm sleeping with my AC on. I am totally serious. At school, I'm hot all day. It's weird. I'll be cold for a minute and then I'm sweating! So, any and all advice.. I just put my ac on and it's around 30 something degrees out.
I went through menopause ten years ago and dealt with hot flashes. Now I'm on a medication that causes hot flashes. I use the ceiling fan in my bedroom when one comes on, and I dress in layers so I can easily peel off warmer clothes.
Wear all cotton.
Drink ice water.
Your bed sheets should be all cotton as well.
Tie a cool wet bandana around your neck.
Hold an ice pack to your wrists, one at a time.
Take more showers. Use barely warm water or cool water if you can take it.
Eat salads and cold food.
Mine lasted right at 10 years as well. I would be reading to my class and I would fog my own eyeglasses. I would wipe them clean and try to read again but they would just fog up again. I would have to ask a student to read for me for a few minutes. Then I would finally cool off a bit.
I started going through menopause when I was 52. Well, it was brought on by my hysterectomy. I was hot for the next 10 years. I rarely wore a coat, even on the coldest days. It just felt so good to be cold. Then, it went away, and I actually had to turn the heat on again. About that time, I had to start taking a medication that causes hot flashes, probably the same med that travelingfar takes. Horrible stuff. Anyway, I'm hot all the time again. DH says we don't need a furnace. Everyone can just gather around me.
Have you been having them for the whole 10 years or is this new?
If it’s been the whole time, I’d be heading to the gynecologist for medication. Hormones may work or Zoloft is often used off-label for hot flashes.
It’s just started I’d head to the doctor to check for other reasons. I understand hot flashes because I had an early hysterectomy. My hot flashes started up again when I started having issues with my blood sugar. When it’s under control they go away.
Why do you have the AC on when it’s 32 outside? Open a window!
I’ve been hot my entire life. I was the kid who wouldn’t wear a jacket and hated long sleeves. Mom said she’d wrap me up as a baby, and I’d be sweaty and fussy. In college I slept with my windows open because we had a boiler that put out heat even when it wasn’t turned on.
I’ve got a good collection of lightweight cardigans, but three long-sleeved shirts. The cardigans usually hang on the back of my chair. My air conditioning is always on at work. Heat is never above 62 at home.
I’ve tried everything. I just dress in lightweight fabrics, sleep on cotton sheets, and use a cooling towel and fan. I’ll just be sympathetic.

Yes, the entire 10 years.

Because I have blinds and they make noise IF they blow... but for some reason my room still is hot even when I open the blinds during the day.. there's no cross ventilation and it's just hot..
I am always hot, also, after being cold all of my life. I keep my window open at night. There are times when my favorite place to visit is the produce cooler at Costco.
Have you tried the supplement Evening Primrose Oil? I did when I started my hot flashes a few years ago and it made a big difference. They almost went completely away. Then I had breast cancer and radiation and stopped taking it. Not sure why? I think someone said the Tomoxifen (sp?) caused hot flashes too??
Anyway, you can get it at Walmart. I'm getting some again because the flashes are awful again.
It's awful and I hate it! I don't know how anyone gets used to it.
Thyroid problems can cause being hot. I know that a med I'm taking after having cancer can cause hot flashes. But I'm not exactly "flashing", just hot all the time with periods of more heat.
