A friendís grandson may have the opportunity to be in a K/1 multiage classroom next fall. He would be entering kindergarten. Her daughter is wondering if this would be the right thing for him. Do any of you have thoughts and/ or experiences either for or against this? Iíd appreciate any insights you might have!

Depends on the teacher

Our multi-age teacher is awesome and I think the kids get a fabulous education in her room! She has the benefit of having a great assistant who helps her differentiate and work in small groups. I believe it really depends on the teacher. My first school had a multi-age teacher who was very knowledgeable but she lacked relational skills. I wouldn't have wanted my child in her room for two years.

Some advantages - peer examples, if you are in the lower age group you can work up with the higher group if appropriate, often the students chosen to be in a multi-age group are higher functioning (not necessarily the high academic kids, but the more independent kids)

Some disadvantages - the age gap can be huge if you have a young kinder and an older firstie, you don't get the full kinder experience, gaps in the curriculum
