Jan Richardson Guided Reading

Hello everyone! I love how Jan Richardson organizes and explains how to teach guided reading. I have noticed that she does not give the kids a set of pages to read. She just stops them from reading when she wants to discuss and they mark their place with a sticky note. The next day, the students pick up from where they left off the day before. Is it better to just let students read the text until she stops to discuss or to have all the kids read to a certain page before discussing? Please tell me your thoughts!

Thanks,

Kat

If you are working one on one, you can stop them whenever you want. In a small group, you might have to quickly judge where each child is. It would depend on you teaching point...if itís mechanics, you can stop them at any point. If itís comprehension, you might have to make sure they are pretty close to each other.
