No Student Desks/tables?

Has anyone found an alternative to student desks/tables? Just brainstorming and wondering if having only chairs/rugs/clipboards would get old. The students would have their texts/folders, etc stored on shelves. What do you think? Try it or skip the idea?

I think it is important to give students the option to use desks if they choose. Some kids just find it more comfortable. So, I like the idea of alternative seating, but including desks as one of the seating options.

I agree with giving kids options. Stand-up desks, various chairs, or whatever. A traditional desk chair should always be an option IMO.

To desk or not to desk...

for my kiddos organization is a real issue. The only other place to have them store things is their cubbies which store their textbooks. If I were to go desk-less, I'd have to make sure there were plenty of storage options which could be a problem for small sized classrooms.

I was considering the same thing because the room I'm going to be in will be so small. I like the idea of options. Maybe cutting it down to three tables instead of five?

Something to think about...

An occupational therapist would tell you that a child needs a solid surface on which to write-one that does not move or need to be balanced on his/her lap. I feel it would be difficult to constantly be asked to write on a board on my lap.

I have tables with chairs, tables without chairs (remove the bottom part of the table legs and the kids sit on the floor). I also have white boards that we use in place of clipboards. In addition, I have rubbermade stepstools that the kids can either sit on with a white board on their laps or they can put the white board on the stool to use like a small personal desk. They also have the option of putting the whiteboard on the floor and laying down which for kids with OT issues is often the way they go.

I just know as a kid always wanting my own space. I always felt cramped on the carpet and didn't like people in my personal space. I was also very specific about my supplies.
