Im moving and Had to leave my NYCDOE school counselor position. I luckily got a school counselor position where I moved but itís much different than the city sc duties. In the NYCDOE your primary job is seeing mandates, and risk, middle school applications and if thereís time community building. My new school you donít have that just classroom education, parent outreach and programming. Iím not fully sure how to start the year off and start programming/parent outreach. Any tips? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm sorry you haven't gotten a response yet! I was hoping someone who had more experience in that specific area would jump on board. I don't know what kind of a parent population you had, but I would want to start off with a needs assessment if it's possible. That would help you understand what kind of parent outreach is needed. If you can survey parents (via email using the school email list?) and survey teachers and get an idea of the kind of outreach services that would be most effective, that would be a great place to start. Also, if you have any access to the person previously in that position or people who worked with that person who can share the types of things to do, that would also be really helpful.

I wish I could be of more help! This board has been really slow for a little while, so hopefully you'll be able to help make it more active and we can get more people in again! Good luck!!

Thanks so much! Thatís a great idea. How would you go about surveying? Like at pta meetings? And what would a form look like? Thanks again!

Some links that may be helpful are below. Some of them focus on needs assessments for teachers or students, but you can figure out how you want to do it to include parents/community.

For parents, I would consider doing a google doc (one of these links explains how) and send out emails with the link included or some online forum (you can also use something like survey monkey). This only works if most parents have tech and speak English, of course. You could also do a form that goes home with everyone, but that's a lot of paper and you'll get way fewer back.

Hopefully the links below will give a little more information. They are all from different sources, but some may be helpful!
