How do you do Daily 5 if you are expected to do Guided Reading groups? I don't think they go together.

It depends on how you have to do guided reading. If you are expected to follow a strict model of teaching within the small group that doesn't fit with student, then technically no. If you can teach small group work with goals that fits student need as guided reading, then it's closer. If you can squeeze in some conferences in between or in place of one group, it's closer. I think the difference is daily 5 is meant to be more responsive to student need including adjusting group size (1:1 vs small group ) and individualized goals, while guided reading is often set according to "how it's done" (always group by level, meet certain groups a certain number of times, not as focused on a clear goal possibly, possibly following a set format ). I like to view guided reading as just small group teaching . There is a reason why the sisters felt guided reading was lacking. Finding a way to individualize as Daily 5 does while jumping through mandated hoops is always a challenge.

I agree. We are mandated to do Guided Reading with fidelity. Should meet with most struggling readers Daily. Doesn't always happen. I'm struggling to get all of my groups in this year. We are also mandated to do close reading daily and writer's workshop so you can imagine each block is fairly short.

I teach my kindergarteners how to do daily five independently.
I meet with guided reading groups while they do daily five.
we follow a schedule so that we get through all four stations and all four groups a day.
i have the schedule up on the smart board so they each know where their group is supposed to be.
while i am doing reading groups i wear my “dont bother me” hat
I have a responsible student be the “ask me” helper in case anyone else needs help.
they make the sign for restroom if they need to go while i am busy.
my classes have always loved daily five so they are enthusiastic about it.

Go together

In my opinion, they totally go together. You can pull guided reading groups while the rest of your students are at a Daily 5 center/task. During 1 rotation, you have a guided reading group, and the rest of the kids are doing a Daily 5 activity. Then you pull a new guided reading group and kids switch tasks.
