easy "sewing"

Clip to ScrapBook #1

We did "sewing" this morning as one of our fine motor stations and they loved it! And it was so easy! I had purchased a bunch of non-slip placemat things at the thrift store, kind of like these rug pads. Then I cut them up, and let the kids use plastic sewing needles and thin yarn to sew. One of my boys was SO excited. He comes in and says "I've always wanted to learn how to knit!" Anyway, it was a great fine motor activity so I wanted to share!

That is awesome and such a good idea! There are also stiffer plastic grids And shapes at Joann Fabrics that might be easier for them to handle and the hoses are big enough for plastic needles. They are in the embroidery section.

I bet your kids would like "weaving" too with a wire cooling rack from the Dollar Store or a thrift store and some ribbon. I like that you are introducing them to the skill of sewing. So few people do it anymore that many kids never or rarely see it. I also love it when teachers really work on those fine motor skills. Developing them is so important and often overlooked nowadays in the push for academics at younger and younger ages. What grade do you teach?

Love this idea. Did they have to pull the yarn out at the end?

Did they bring them home?

would love to see their final creations. I think I am going to pull out my threading bears and see what I find.

I let them bring them home since the 6 placemats made tons of small squares. I even posted some pictures today and asked parents if anyone has more plastic needles. I think I'm going to let them sew during quiet time if they'd like.

We actually inherited a huge loom last year. I haven't brought it out yet (still need to get it set up) but I'm super excited about it. I never thought of using a wire cooling rack!!
