Has anyone had time to read this article about the Units of Study approach to reading by Lucy Calkins? What did you think?

I agree with much of it. We've been using it. I've found that more primary teachers like it, but the kids get to upper elementary with significant holes. It is very loose and open-ended, especially the writing.

It might work better in a more affluent area where students tend to come in with more language and are often higher-achieving. Our students are mostly ELLs and tend to struggle more in general. They need more structure and explicit instruction. My higher kids seem to do better with it.

I'm ready for something new!

I think the article has some very good points. We've been using the Units for 4 years. This year's group of students are the least motivated readers I've ever taught. Our primary grades have more students struggling than ever before. I can't lay that all on the Units of Study, but I do believe it does play a role in the struggles we're seeing.
