Today is May 1st and that means its the beginning of mental health awareness month! Mental illnesses include depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, personality disorders and autism spectrum disorder. 1 in 5 people lives with a mental illness and 1 in 19 lives with a serious mental illness, defined as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder or schizophrenia.

Thank you for doing this, Nancy! Mental illness is something we encounter in our classrooms frequently, and often without being aware that this is what is causing the behaviors we see. Many of us have it ourselves, or in our families. Most of us know little about it, and then there's the stigma, as if the ill person has a character flaw instead of an illness.

We all need to know more about mental illness: what it is, its causes, and how to deal with it when we encounter it.

...Not to mention the countless teachers that experience things like anxiety and depression (including me!). Thank you.

more is not generally known about how to help and signs to look for in family or friends. I think if more information was widely available and better treatment options were available things would improve for everyone and there would be less stigma attached to mental illness.

This is something that people don't know enough about. I would not know if it weren't for your posts. There is a woman at our church whose adult son is a drug addict living on the streets. She said he is bipolar. I do not know his history but I do not believe he had the same opportunity for care that others get. I think people give up when treatment by a family doctor doesn't work instead of seeking out more qualified doctors. Maybe they don't have access to treatment because of finances and lack of good health insurances. Maybe they just don't know. Nancy, I think you are wonderful for truly being an advocate for your daughter and for voicing your opinions (your knowledge of mental health issues).

Thank you for these posts. We can only begin to try to understand when we are informed. Thank you for giving us the tools we need to be more compassionate.

ADHD and the autism spectrum are actually classified as developmental disabilities, not mental illnesses (though of course people in either group can have mental illnesses too).

That is true FlyingLizard, but NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) actually now classifies them as mental illnesses as well.

Thank you for helping more people understand and learn about mental health. I know so many people who just think it goes away if you just get out and do things.

That is really interesting. I wouldn't classify them that way, either.

I'm glad you're posting. I think mental health is such an essential topic to discuss.
