Day 3 -

Like cancer, diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, mental illness is a medical condition requiring treatment, support and education! We can all help by educating ourselves, trying to understand and being supportive of those who live with a brain illness as well as showing support to their loved ones!

Because for years the mechanism for mental illness was unknown, people assumed it was a character flaw. In fact, we now know that is caused by changes in brain chemistry, and we have some medications which can correct the brain chemistry. More research is needed, but we are beginning to understand the roots of the problem. It is a fascinating area of research, which one day may lead to all kinds of understanding about the function of the brain.

Amen, and Amen!! People don't bat an eye at being treated for any other illness, but brain illness is still considered a "choice" by many. While dealing with depression, I was told often to: "read your Bible and get over it!" and "You aren't trusting God enough!", and the worst, "Have you considered prayer for deliverance?"
