We just learned that our friends are adopting a little girl (4 yrs old) from China who has Down Syndrome. We would love to get them a gift. Any bright ideas? TIA!

Most parents do need gift cards for stuff. I do like special momentos and my DD still has a few favorite things from her baby shower gifts. Maybe a special blanket or stuffed animal or book or outfit.

I’d go a different direction and not practical. I’d get a toy for the little girl. The Magnatiles recommended here for my DD’s niece turning 3 were a big hit. If you are still feeling generous, how about an Amazon gift card for the parents?

And good for your friends for adopting a child with special needs. I admire them.

How wonderful. How about a pretty picture frame and a gift card ... and a toy? Depends on your budget.

When we adopted our DD (at 5), people threw an adoption shower for us. It included toys, games, clothes, and books. We really didn't have a lot for her, so all was appreciated.

I think a cute hooded bath towel and bath toys would be fun.

We had a teacher who adopted a 6 and 8 year old brother and sister. We also threw them an adoption shower. In addition to toys and things for their rooms, a group us us got together and purchased a membership to our local zoo for a year. Maybe a local children’s museum membership if you had a group gift.

Simple picture books. Maybe some alphabet books with one letter/ letter picture per page.

Throw in a gift card so they can get what is needed.

When one of our staff adopted via foster care, we all pooled money for a gift certificate for a professional photo session so they could new family photos.

What a great list of ideas! You could also look at a gifts for adoptions website. There are some beautiful ideas on those sites. Maybe a "Life Book", which is similar to a Baby Book but adopted especially for adopted children.

My beautiful niece has Down Syndrome. Amazon has a series of simple books that feature kids with DS. She loves having books with people that have beautiful eyes like hers!
