I am currently a spanish teacher, and I would like to know if I should get my master degree in Reading vs Esol? I would like to know which would offer my more mobility in my career, less stress, and job opportunities....Thank you so much for your help. I live in MD/DC area. Note...I only have the praxis to be the esol teacher on record. I need a master's in reading to be the teacher on record.

I live in a diverse area, so there are always ESOL positions available. I feel very safe in always having job opportunities. With that being said, the way that it works here is that when the ESOL student population numbers change year to year, you may be destaffed from your school due to lowering numbers. I've had to move to a different school due to numbers changing 5 times in the past 8 years. Now, I know a lot of ESOL teachers who have not moved so many times, it turned out that way for me because I was always the "new" ESOL teacher. The good part about all the moving is that I've worked with some wonderful teachers and have had some great experiences.

If I were not an ESOL teacher, I'd want to be a Reading Specialist. You have a tough decision. Either job will be super rewarding. I'd go with the position I feel most interested in. Good luck!

I teach middle school Spanish and ESOL, and have recently completed a master's in TESOL. This program contained several courses in teaching reading to ELL's as well as the other skills they need. The numbers in our programs here in FL vary, but also having a Spanish certification guarantees the administration will always have courses I can teach. Good luck in your coursework.
