2 blocks of ESL with mixed grades and levels...what do I do? Some of this time is to work on homework too! Anyone else in this sort of situation? I need some ideas!!!

Thanks!

I am in this very exact situation! I have had gifted 12th graders mixed with very beginners.

I try to stick to the same topic/skill/story and differentiate it. For example:

My beginners/intermediates might read an easier story on MLK Jr. while my higher students might read a middle school level story. They will then complete the same graphic organizer using the different text.

I never work on homework for the whole period. I usually tell the students to bring in hw they are having difficulty with, and we go over it as a do now or at the end of the period.

Planning is sooo time consuming! Also, Hampton Brown has a good ESL series called Inside. It only goes up to a higer elementary reading level, but it is good for your lower students.

I hope this helps a little!
