Thanksgiving Day lesson for ELL/Sped students?

Hey all,

I am a student teacher and next week I am set to teach a 45 minute lesson to a group of 5th graders, who are ESL and Special Ed. I would say their English language proficiency levels are high intermediate to low advanced though.

I need to do something Thanksgiving based. Perhaps focus on the first thanksgiving story and common myths surrounding that or how thanksgiving has changed and evolved into what it is today? I need something that will keep them on their toes as some of them tend to wander off and get disinterested quickly.

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance!

you could read some well illustrated books describing the first Thanksgiving or some some that give background on the pilgrims like Samuel Eaton's Day or Sarah Morton's Day.
The students might write a play to give dialog and action to the lead characters as well as others they meet during their day. They then could perform the play. They might work on acting out the parts to develop the play orally first and then write it to incorporate what they developed.

You might want to have them investigate foods from the new world. Here's one source http://staff.esuhsd.org/balochie/stu...ods/index.html
your can also search foods of the new world for more information.
They might research and write about cultivating, preparing, etc. the foods. Or develop a story about Europeans first encountering and trying these strange foods.
