Fourth Graders Not Using Periods

My latest batch of fourth graders are terrible about using periods at the end of sentences. This happens in both hand-written work and work done with Google Docs. Any tricks for helping them remember?

I hand back work and ask them to fix but can't believe how many smart kids just don't bother do place punctuation at the end of their sentences, then repeat for the next assignment.

It might be exactly how they text on their phones. I would buy a few boxes of red pens and before the class hands in the assignment they get a pen and put in all of their punctuation.

Remind them ahead of time that punctuation counts, and it will be graded. You will no longer be handing back the work for corrections in punctuation. Hand back a few big fat Fs, and they may magically remember, especially those who are just not bothering.

Are these same students remembering to capitalize the first word of the new sentence after omitting the previous period?

Some kids today do not care about Fs on their work. I found that attitude meant I had to find something to motivate them to at least look at their work one more time. The pens were a novelty to the 4th graders. I teach kindergarten now and the work ethic of older children is the reason why

In "Whole Brain Teaching" there's a recommendation that one teach periods by drawing a line with the finger in the air (as the thought is expressed) and end the thought (sentence) by poking an imaginary button at the end and making a "thwock" or pop noise. If you can stand the noise, it might be interesting to have them re-read their work using that technique?
