Union people--candidate statement?

I've agreed to run for my union's executive board, and have to write a "statement supporting my candidacy." What do you say in something like that? There's a separate place on the form for qualifications/experience, so I'm thinking not those.

This thing is only 100 words--probably shorter than this post! No one will read it, and I'll almost certainly be running unopposed, but somehow I've still been paralyzed about it for the last week. Help??!?

I would just say something about wanting to support teachers and help make the union stronger.

Good luck.

Thank you!! That's the gist of most of my 47 deleted attempts. I really need to stop obsessing and just send something in. Maybe I'll cram the phrase "in a post-Janus world" in there a couple of times, too...

Agree with GG. Keep it simple. The union helps teachers. Thanks for your commitment. I'm on my union's negotiating committee.

ETA: Sometimes union leadership skews towards secondary teachers. If so, you can highlight that you bring a fresh elementary voice to the table. (If that's the case.) I know that was true in my case. But be positive!

Write from your heart about why you want to improve the lives of teachers. Good luck!

I agree.
Keep it simple.
--willing work hard on behalf of members
--importance of working together to ensure fair and equitable working conditions for teachers
--perhaps mention key issues that are unique to your union and bargaining unit --- might be prep time, just cause, staffing, sick leave etc.
--depending on your local climate might want to use a slogan such as "teacher working conditions are student learning conditions"

Good luck.

Thank you all SO much! I don't know why I'm freaking out about this so badly.

I think I've finally got something I'm ready to submit, so I guess now I can move on to freaking out about the speech I have to give at the next RA, after break.

Jeez, thank YOU for YOUR commitment! Bargaining team--which I'm assuming is the same as your negotiating committee--is one role I would never take on!

Please let us know how it goes. I was elected our union's vice president and I had to do something similar. Thank you for your future service!
