I'm about to start teaching K-5 general and vocal music in a private school after three years of teaching choir in a public high school. I only get to see each class of students once a week for 50 minutes. Any suggestions for how I can maximize their retention from one week to the next so we don't have to spend all our time re-learning concepts? The good news is that the school is okay with the kids having homework in specials, so I've thought of sending home a little "music packet" of activities for them to do each week so they at least have SOME contact with it. Also, a lot of the kids take music lessons outside of school, so that will probably help.

I see my kids once a week for 50 minutes as well. What I hate about that is if they are absent on that day they have missed a whole week's lesson.

We have had great success with games and because of the 50 min block it makes it easier to do so. There will always be review and repetition but it's not as bad as you think it will be.

Have you asked to see if you can see the kids twice a week for 25 minutes?

Good luck!
