Integrated Unit Assignment!!!

Hello. I am working on my integrated unit assignment for my reading curriculum and instruction course I am currently in. I have no clue what theme to pick. It just seems overwhelming and I can really use some help and guidance. I would very much appreciate it. Questions I have are: What is a good grade level to focus on? What is a good straightforward theme that isnít broad? What area of content should I use as cross content (Math, science, Social studies, Health, Physical education, music, or art)?

I also have to include reading and writing components (phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing), as well as literary elements (setting, plot, characters, conflict, theme).

Quickly: Which grade(s) do you hope to teach after you graduate? Design your unit for one of those. Then look at state standards and see whether any specific topics are mentioned. You might find more topics listed in social studies and science than in English language arts. Then pick one. Re cross-content, when we did an integrated unit waaaaay back in grad school, we were required to include many different content areas. I wouldn't select just one; I would include several. A web planner could be a good tool to help you organize.

Surely you've discussed this in class and you have a textbook that describes the process. A quick online search for "how to write an integrated literacy unit" turns up a lot of resources and sample units.

Start with k-2 or 3-5. Then look at the standards for ELA or Math. From there, you can begin to plan.

Good luck.

Have students conduct research and you automatically cover reading and writing. In 4th, we learn Indians of Ohio in s.s. and then complete a big writing project after researching the culture s. Of course there are many mini lessons on the "how to ".
