Zoom edition: Things you've said!

Things I never thought I'd have to say: (Zoom edition)

"R, stop jumping on your bed and come sit down."
"Whoever is drawing all over my screen, stop it now!"

Things I'm glad parents said:

Student: I'm hot. (Starts to take off his shirt)

Parent: You can't take your shirt off. You're in front of the camera!

And its only Day 3. What have you said or heard.

P.S. (I'm going to miss the mute button when we go back to school.)

What have you said or heard?

Isn't that the best invention ever??

This twitter thread made me laugh today, though:

I wish I could mute botton my traditional kids. OMG! They are the problems, not the virtual ones.

Quote of the day:
"Is that your cat? Let me see!"

I do LOVE the mute button! On the other hand, when it actually is the student's turn to speak, I'm often heard saying; "You need to un-mute yourself, we can't hear you."

Zoom sayings and camera control

I turn off a camera to prevent kids from staring
At chapstick being applied, lips pursing
At Mom in white tank top, no bra
At Eating, chewing, ABC joke up close to the camera
Teeth inspection,

Fly crawling on the kidís camera.

Sleeping, (I put them in the waiting room. It will be quiet on their end. I re-admit them in a few minutes. If they donít respond to their name. I put them back in the waiting room and leave them there.)

Words: Sit up,you are in school. That is not allowed at school and it is not allowed on Zoom. (Spinning in chair, tossing a toy at the camera,

If I turn off their camera, the kids can not restart it. It makes them feel powerless. We have talked as a class, if I turn off your camera, I will restart it in a couple of minutes. I now give a warning if I can.

I teach 2nd. One little girl yesterday attended our Google Meets lesson sans shirt. No one batted an eye. Luckily, the camera didn't focus on her, as she didn't speak aloud. I'm sure no one noticed except me. I e-mailed her mom afterwards to remind her about proper attire.

I have to say, my 2nd graders are really good about tuning in, listening, contributing, etc.

So, I had to turn a camera off

because the student was having a knock-down, drag out fist fight with another person at her house, while two adults stood around and watched. (Thankfully she was muted.)

The way Zoom is set up for us is that we can't turn on their cameras or unmute them. For privacy reasons, they say. We can turn them off, but we can only send them requests if they leave them off.
