Yesterday, did you guys hear about that 30 y.o. guy who attended one of those stupid COVID parties that have gained popularity who died because he thought COVID was a hoax so he didn't take it seriously and thought he was too young and invincible?

For those who haven't heard, a “COVID party” is a gathering held by someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus, the doctor said. People attend to see who gets infected first.

Stupid, just stupid.

I saw that. What a waste of a life. I don’t understand why your own life and health are not valuable enough to protect. Everybody hates wearing a mask. It’s not like all of us who wear masks are happy about it.

Sad but I don't have any sympathy for him. That was his choice. Feel bad for the family though (unless they are like-minded). Man I sound bitter, but it’s so frustrating!

Yep, very stupid.

I do feel sorry for him, his loved ones-- and, for sure, anyone he might have exposed to the virus.

We all sometimes do risky things (usually not quite so obvious). Speeding. Lifting something too heavy. Putting off a colonoscopy.

Usually we don't pay with our lives. He did, he realized what he had done, and he regretted his decision. Sad story.

Sorry, no sympathy. People who are doing their best to stay healthy are dying because of nitwits like this. Health care professionals are putting themselves at risk to treat fools like this. And, 30 years old is old enough to know better.

I've heard that at some of these "parties" the nincompoops, I mean guests, contribute to a pot. The first one to test positive wins the pot of money.

Since your oxygen level becomes affected, can't you buy a little meter that's clips onto your finger to measure the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream? That might be handy to have.

shades of bad ideas of the past

It seems like humans just don't learn from past mistakes.
Years ago I remember parents having measles and chicken pox parties, sleep overs for their kids because they thought if they got the childhood disease that way it would be a milder case. Some parents learned it didn't.
And now it is reinvented as a COVID party.

I feel for the family and those who might have been infected because of peoples stupidity. I can't imagine thinking it a hoax when it is on TV and the news 24/7. Too bad he realized his mistake when it was too late. I too heard of the parties with the COVID pot. So sad for the winner.

This is nothing new. How many have died playing Russian Roulette? Same game different name.

Yep, I don't know what it will take to get these completely stupid, stubborn people to take it seriously.

This lady on another (non-teaching) board I belong to still doesn't believe all this COVID stuff and didn't believe this particular story either. I asked her what part she didn't believe it and thinks COVID's all a conspiracy and thes people have underlying conditions, blah, blah.

I told her whether people have underlying conditions or are as healthy as an Olympian with the perfect athletic body, anyone can still catch it & die. To ALL those who still think there's nothing to it, I dare them to be maskless and go be in the same indoor, enclosed, not very spacious room w/ people who already have COVID...like a 50/50 ratio (1/2 in the room have it & the other 1/2 doesn't) and see what happens. I think the results will be:

- most will catch it, but it's hard to say who would be asymptomatic (showing zero symptoms) & who would show outright symptoms (fever, etc.)

- those who are sick will show varying severities of being ill

- some will definitely die, won't go as far as to say most, but those some could be of all ages, etc.

Let's take a deep dive.

So, according to the article, a doctor reported that a nurse said that a patient said....

Under what journalistic standard did this story see print?

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I'm saying it is a third-hand story that should never have gotten past an editor.

And I AM saying that it is certainly possible that the story is a fabrication.

Sorry. My standards are high for journalists. Too bad the standards of journalists do not meet mine.
