Spelling Activities

Spelling is something I do not look forward too. We use a spelling workbook & it's just repetitive and boring. What are some fun, challenging, interesting spelling activities you give your students for homework?

Here's my list....

I print it on yellow cardstock and then put it in a page protector in a yellow spelling folder. They keep it all year.

CheleOh - That's awesome!!! That's a great idea for those students who like to have choice. (Those who hate to be told what to do. Heh.)

ViolaSwamp, I love your point system for spelling. You called this spelling homework. Do your students also do other spelling assignments during the school day? TIA

I don't spend a lot of time during the day on spelling - most everything reading, math, or writing. I do have my students write their words in cursive every Monday for morning work. I print out a handwriting practice sheet from edhelper. We go over the week's words and their spelling "rule." We also review them w/ a game on Thursdays. Hope this answers your question .

I love the new fresh ideas. I do similar activities. Although the workbook can seem repetitive, I love it. I feel it is good for the kids to see spelling patterns and sounds, how to use the words correctly, etc. Adding in the fun activities helps the kids with variety - definitely!

I am disappointed because our district is getting rid of the spelling workbook, well we can use it if we want, but it is not supposed to be part of their grade - so confusing! I need/want a straight answer on this.

I love your point system! This could also work well for the kids to work on during guided reading time---as a "station or center" to work on as independent work while the teacher is conducting guided groups. Thanks!

Google search for "Speller's Choice." There is a great list of things the kids can do.
I give a spelling pre-test, and the kids are responsible for studying at home all week. They can choose a different activity to do each night, and their parents sign off on what they did on their weekly Spelling/Reading Log (they also read for 20-30 min each night).
I also sometimes do a speller's choice activity as a center.

spelling words

I like all the choices you give your students for spelling words, but I have some questions. Where do you get your list of spelling words? The words that go along with my basal are pretty easy for my fifth graders, however, they go along with the skill I am supposed to teach. Also, do you correct this homework? I have 40 ELA students and cannot imagine having to go over these papers each week and assigning them points. Any suggestions?

trade papers

I totally agree with you about not being able to check all of my kids spelling homework papers. That's why I have them trade and check their neighbor's HW, I have a record sheet where they write down how many points their neighbor got and put their initials so I know who checked it. I also walk around and pick several kids' to check myself - just to make sure they're being honest. They never know what day I might check their HW, so they want to make sure they do it and check their neighbor's correctly. This works pretty well. Here's a copy of my record sheet.

to work on spelling. At www.spellingcity.com you can input your spelling lists for the week and the kids can play games with them, study their words or even take a test over them. My kids LOVED it! They were able to play the games at home to study them!
