Books to read the first week of school...

Any picture book suggestions to read during the first week of school that could tie in with building classroom community, rules, building relationships, good back to school books, etc...thanks!

ALSO, there was a book that my professor read to our class back in college, it was all about reading. I actually think that the book was called, "BOOK," but I can't find it anywhere. Anytime I type in 'the book, BOOK,' ridiculous amounts of things come up, and I have no clue who the other is. If anyone has any clue what I'm talking about...that'd be great!

Not sure about picture books, but I always read "How to be a Perfect Person in Three Days" to my kids every year. It's a short read and leads to good discussions about strengths and weaknesses and being who you are.

A Bad Case of Stripes (being yourself)
Mr. Peabody's Apples (can't take back what you do/say)
Salt in his Shoes (setting goals)
Crysanthemum
The Crayon Box that talked

I second First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg! It's such a cute book and my 4th & 5th graders LOVED it! I also read Last Day Blues by her on the last day of school and my kids formed a cha-cha line on their way out of the building like the teachers did in the book!

First Day Jitters and Salt in His Shoes (as mentioned by other posters)

I also read aloud The Top 10 Ways to Ruin the First Day of School by Ken Derby at the beginning of the year. I use it as a whole group practice lit circle book.

Generally you cover place value at the beginning of the year, so the How Much is A Million by S. Kellogg is good for that..

I teach first grade and we always read "The Teacher From The Black Lagoon" and then compare/contrast withe "The Class From The Black Lagoon". I always find that it helps my little students to let them know that I'm a little nervous too!
