The 100th day of school also represents the 1000th day for fifth graders. Since we are in a new building with all of the fifth grades in one place, we want to celebrate this milestone together. Any ideas??

Last year I helped 5th graders celebrate 1000th day for the first time. We had a blast! I attached the sheets that I gave the students that day. We began by talking about 1000 - 1000, M, 10(to the third). Students listed factor pairs and prime factorization.
Next the students made life maps which were the foundation for the writing we began on a later date (it was to be at least 1000 words long, reflecting on their first 1000 days of school). At first they thought it would end up being as long as a book, but two days in, they realized it was more doable than they thought. This year I will let them meet in groups determined by their past teachers. That really helped jog their memories of things that happened in their past and made the writing easier. These stories ended up being fun to read, and everyone felt like they really accomplished something!
For the activities with pennies, I split the group into five groups and gave each group 200 pennies to work with. Making the bar graph took longer than I anticipated, but I loved watching how the different groups approached the task. Two weeks later, I asked for a volunteer group of students to combine the info on all of the bar graphs and make a gigantic one which we hung in the hall for P/T conferences.
So that I didn't have all groups in the hallway at once (for the third page of activities), I sent one group out right away while others were working on page two. I kept rotating in that manner until all groups completed all of the activities. The students really enjoyed the activities.
Besides the breaks were we would jump for joy, I also made a 1000 piece stew. I brought 10 bags of 100 items in each, and we mixed them together into two big bowls and munched all day. The ten bags had pretzels, mini marshmallows, Cheerios, several other types of cereal, M&Ms, etc.
Thanks for the great ideas so far. I am adding reading silently for 1000 seconds. We will also collectively complete 1000 math problems. I love the 1000th Day Stew and the factors of 1000.
Never thought about the 1000th day of school, but love the idea. I have a multi-aged classroom, and think this would be a great project of my 5th graders. Some of the suggestions above can be made into class presentations by the 5th for the others.

It had the answer to my question about the 1000 days, and it listed some ideas that may not have already been mentioned on this thread.
projects always turn out nice for hallway displays. I have attached the assignment I pass out (adapted from another poster) The first handout is if you want a story option (I do not choose that one, and the second one has an additional requirment..more for my higher group) If they choose to do the 1,000 penny project, we will then donate the pennies they collected to a local charity. Enjoy!
I also have them, on the back of their projects share their favorite memory from the last 1,000 days of school Many will pick something current, but I have also had many share something they did when they were little or a favorite teacher of theirs (which is so cute, and the parents enjoy reminiscing (?) with their child).
