Picture Books for Mystery

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello Everyone,
I was just notified on Friday that I would be filling in for a maternity leave for the rest of the year starting on Monday...not much time to prepare!

The rest of the fifth grade team is starting a unit on mysteries and we will each get the kids for 2-3 days and then they are moving on to the next teacher for a new mystery. I need a quick mystery read aloud but everything I have found is either too babyish for 5th grade or is too long to cover in just a few days. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help!

Right now it is just to introduce the genre of mystery so at this point it is reading only. Eventually the unit study will spread to writing.

What about the Eleventh Hour? Teacher Clubhouse has a whole set of lessons for fifth grade all ready set up at this website.

It might well be worth your money.

Mysteries of Harris Burdick

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is a picture book full of picture mysteries. It's not really a read aloud but would generate a lot of discussion about mystery and can also generate writing about mysteries.

Will non-fiction mystery picture books work?

Try Unsolved Mystery From History: The Mary Celeste by Jane Yolen is a great non fiction story that will catch the attention of your students. They will all want to solve this real mystery. They will be able to find a great deal of information on line about this ship's disappearance as well, if you want them to research. I think Jane Yolen has written a couple of other picture book mysteries as well, but I have not read them.

To intro the mystery genre, I have used Grandpa's Teeth with 5th graders. It is a good book to identiy and discuss mystery characteristics.
