Hi fellow fifth grade teachers!
I am teaching fifth grade world geography for the first time and need creative ideas. We have a really old textbook that is very dry. What do you do besides read the textbook and answer questions in the book? (I'm moving from an 8th grade Life Skills class) Thanks for your ideas!

mrs waffenschmidt on education world! She visits a new place each week, gives clues and the kids are encouraged to find out where in the world she is! Might be something fun that can be done on computers, using atlases and world maps.

All I remember from my middle school world geo class is the following:
Qatar is shaped like a Q-tip. Oman is over ON the ocean. . I'm sure that doesn't help much, but I guess what I'm saying is coming up with these little sayings at least helped me remember SOMETHING!

I love teaching using games and mnemonic devices as PP have suggested. I use "I Have Who Has" to introduce a continent and teach the world continent by continent. We remember things like the order of the countries on the Northern part of South America as "That Venezulan GUY SURely is FRENCH" (Venezula, Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana) and use a lot of web-sites, atlas reading, projects, etc.. to help us learn the world. I do not use the textbook.

Here's a link to a post earlier this month that might give you some ideas.
