Anyone have an really cool 1st Grade activities for 5th graders?

I never thought I'd be teaching this age group and most of my "stuff" is for K-3rd.

I'd appreciate anything you can share!

On a side note: my classroom them is stars if that helps any.

These are a few threads that I've bookmarked for the first days of school... there are lots of great ideas from members!

Just as an aside, I taught 3rd grade for lots of years and then went to 5th. I ended up doing many of the same things in 5th that I did in 3rd.

Sometimes I have the students write what they "didn't" do over summer vacation. I encourage them to be as creative and imaginative as possible. An example would be to write about how I didn't join the circus to train the elephants... When everyone is done we share them and I also collect them. This gives me a quick glance of where they are at with their writing.

I created a little worksheet that allows the kids to get to know each other and then me as well.. I give them the worksheet and then 15 minutes to ask their classmates the questions. I have customized the questions for some of the things popular in our town and of course for me..

Another thing we do is create our name in cut out letters. I use Bulletin board letters to trace each letter in the kids 1st name and I have created my Name Mrs. Carpenter.... On each letter the kids decorate it to share something about themselves. I use my name as an example.. ( I have cooking, USA(red, white, and Blue), Irish, Pets, Apples ( for teacher), Sunset, snow...etc). The kids really get into this .. Then we hang the names in the hall.

I have the students write a biopoem about themselves. They then decorate it and we hang it up. They are really proud to have something up of their own the first day.

One of things I do is called experience cards. These are done anonymously. Write an experience you had that no one knows about. Turn in the cards. The teacher reads the card and everyone tries to guess who had the experience.

I really like the experience cards idea! It sort of reminds me of the 2 truths and a lie, but would go a bit faster. Thanks!

I'm a first year teacher this year, and have searched far and wide trying to find some great activities for my students to do on their first day of school. I love your ideas!

Here are some others that I found:
-A "Dear Me" letter, where students write a note to themselves about what they're looking forward to, what they're nervous about, and whatever else they want. The teacher collects them, and hands them back out at the end of the school year for students to reflect on.
-"I can't" funeral. Students take a small sheet of paper, or an index card, and write something they can't do, such as "I can't spell really well." The teacher collects them and buries them (if allowed).
-"Snowball Fight" Students take a piece of paper and write three facts about themselves. They ball up their paper, and have a few minutes to have a snowball fight with their papers. When time's up, they pick up a piece of paper, and have to introduce the person, based on their snowball.

Hope these are helpful.

I do "Two Truths and a Lie" Students write down 2 things they did do (truths) and 1 thing they didn't(lie). After they share students have to determine which is the lie! ts of fun! This also works great after a long break/vacation.
