I want to do a book report for the end of their literature circles but I don't want a typical paper report. Just wondering if anyone has a fun ideas for them. Thanks in advance.

At our grade level (5th) we do book talks monthly. There's a different genre each month and a different project to go along with the book talk. Students fill out a specific book talk summary (including all literature features: plot, summary, genre, conflict, etc.) and present the project for each Book Talk. Here's what I specifically do for projects:

Fantasy genre-Students create a breakfast cereal (& redesign a cereal box) for a character of their choice from the book

Mystery genre-Wanted poster for the "villain"

Realistic Nonfiction-Scrapbook page for a character of their choice

Historical fiction-Students dress as a character as they present their book talk

Adventure-Diorama

Science fiction-We complete "summary sandwiches" where students make a sandwich instead of their summary (each piece is for a different literary piece)

We also do a poetry talk where the student has to memorize the poem and recite it to the class. I'm sure there's more but these are the ones that come to mind. Other ideas I've done just in reading include comic strips (for sequencing), an ABC book, and as a class we complete a video diary entry for a book we read in class.

The Book-in-a-Box is absolutely my favorite. Here's the thread where I share how I use it. There are also some other ideas from other members on there.

I've attached my scoring sheet for the cereal box project I use, too.

When I did book reports, I handed this out at the beginning of the year for the kids to choose from. It gave them a variety of ideas. I bet everyone can find something here.

Board Games

At the end of the year, my team has our fifth graders make board games based on a book they've read. The kids have a lot of fun with it, and it works out perfectly at the end of the year, because after I've packed up all the textbooks, they have these games to play on the last day and then they take them home with them on that last day of school.

I have a template that we used this year that worked really well because it takes them through it step by step, but I'm still new to PT and don't know how to add attachments onto messages. Can anyone help me with this?

I did those with my 5th graders and they had a great time with them.

Basically they write a summary on a piece of lined paper, then glue it to a piece of construction paper (going vertically, so you can read it when it's hanging). Draw a picture under/around the summary. Staple it together to make a "tube". On strips of construction paper (different colors), they write the author's name, setting, author's purpose, etc... (1 per strip).

Hole punch at the top, and use yarn to hang them from the ceiling in the hallway or classroom.

we used old light bulbs placed inside toilet paper tubes to do biography book reports. Could use this as a main character. Baggie reports ....Students place items in a bag and pull them out to help retell the story. Students designed a scene from the book on their paper bag.

I would love this template. It sounds like a lot of fun. Will you email it to me?
