Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hey all,

I'm in the middle of my Bridge to Terabithia unit with my kiddos and they seem to really be enjoying the book. I'm starting to get stuck as to what to have them do in their book clubs during my "guided reading block". I've had them do character trait charts, and inferencing charts as well as come up with some "thick" questions to discuss in group. We're about halfway through but if anyone has any ideas or things you have done I would greatly appreciate it. Today is our first day back from break and already my brain is on summer mode haha.

When we finished the book we made wordles. You can google it if you have never heard of it. It was interesting to see the words they picked to represent the book. They also make a great bulletin board display.

I have my students pretend they are Jesse and keep a journal/sketch book of the events in the story. After each chapter they draw and write Jesse's view of what happened in that chapter.

What a great book, here's an old post with a lot of great ideas, I used quite a few of these when I cover this book with my 5th graders.

Thanks to all of you who posted your activities! Giantsubs, your attachment is great and kmob thanks for the link!

I have this book sitting on the shelf so I should use it.

Do you think it is better to do as an indepent reading or read aloud?

Thanks for all the replies...I'm finally getting a chance to sit down and sift through everything. The links and attachments are great. This is my first time teaching a class novel so I appreciate all the help I forgot how great of a book this was and we've been having some great character discussions...class novel studies are a keeper!

Foul Language in the book

I just read through the book and was going to be starting a unit on it next week but was so upset to find foul language. How did you handle this? I'm a new teacher and don't want any problems with parents.

There are a couple of curse words (If memory serves, D&&n is used a couple of times). Even in my Christian school I have no problem using the book. I just tell kids that the word are there, they will see/hear them from time to time, and to handle it as the mature 5th/6th graders that they are.

I have only had one problem with any book, and that was the book Shiloh. A parent complained about the frequent use of b**ch- I almost laughed out loud. But of course, I clarified that the word was only used in reference to a female dog, which it was, and told the parent that of course her son did not have to read the book if she so chose.
