Which books do you read and then watch the movie? I'm trying to compile a list of books that have been made into movies for 5th graders.

Here's a list I can think of quickly. We don't watch all these movies!!
Matilda
My Side of the Mountain
Johnny Tremain
Across Five Aprils
Ballad of Lucy Whipple
Stone Fox
Sign of the Beaver
Hoot
Tale of Despereaux
Because of Winn Dixie
Sarah Plain and Tall & the two sequels
Charlotte's Web
City of Embers
Holes
Harry Potter
Shiloh
Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler
Harriet the Spy
Where the Red Fern Grows
James and the Giant Peach

I'll try to keep thinking of titles.

There's not an actual Number the Stars movie, but the movie Miracle at Midnight follows the same exact storyline as NTS. My fifth graders LOVE it!

101 Dalmatians was a book by Dodie Clark ? Smith? --- can't remember her last name --- before Disney ever made it into a movie.

The Lightning Thief -- but the movie ventured disappointingly far from the story, in my opinion. Could make for an interesting comparison / contrast lesson, though. As well as a discussion on creative license, and critical thinking on "why do you think they changed it so much from the book ?" Bloom's Taxonomy on the uppermost level !

I forgot Anne of Green Gables, but that is undoubtedly way too girlie for a mixed-gender class.

Island of the Blue Dolphins

I use to have to go to a Blockbuster to get this (I teach 2nd grade now), but as you know, Blockbuster stores are closing everywhere. I live in the Fort Worth area and that library system carries it, so you could try that.

I like Night of the Twisters and A Wrinkle in Time...both are fairly good movies.

I had no idea that there was a movie for Island of the Blue Dolphins!

Goosebumps

As an end-of-the-year time filler, we watch some Goosebumps movies. They are inexpensive and only last about 20minutes/episode. I would NOT recommend the Lightning Thief. It's a great movie, but I think the language and some parts are too mature for fifth graders.
