Title 1 Reading Teacher Schedule

Hi, I have just finished my first year as a T1 Reading teacher (school-wide T1) and my 11th year teaching. Unfortunately I had to have an unexpected surgery recently so I havenít started pulling yet. The substitute is pushing in.
I just want to see if I am on the same page as everyone else. This year I am scheduled to have five 45 to 60 minute classes with a minimum class size of 17 students (as opposed to 14 students, which I had last year). Again the students will be pulled during their reading blocks. I will be responsible for their reading grades again except for 1st grade, in which I will be responsible for my studentsí social studies grades. This seems more like a general education class structure to me. I always looked at T1 as additional support in small group settings. Of course I will continue to use small groups. Iím not complaining but I would like to know if this is the norm.

Title Schedule

Hi, in my district we use to have the "title pull out" (as the teachers called it) which is similar to what you are doing. The title teachers did the instruction and grading for math and reading for title students. In the last 3 years they changed it to being "supplimental" and we are to pull students out of other subjects/specialists, not math and/or reading. We do still give them report cards but not grades. Our blocks were 30 minutes for reading previously and 45 minutes this year to accomodate the new LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) lessons that we will be starting next month. Math is usually about 20-30 minute blocks. We have groups of 3-8 students depending on the subject and how we fit them in our schedule. I hope this helps.

supplement, not supplant

Two things concern me - the large groups and that you are responsible for the reading grades. Title I is a supplemental program by definition, and it looks like "supplant" instead. You are not allowed to be the only reading instruction for the kids. If I were you, I would research on the state's website (usually under Federal Programs or NCLB) and see what the guidelines say.

For supplemental instruction in reading, the groups should only be 6 or fewer. Some say up to 8 students, some say 3 is ideal, it depends on what research you are reading.

Mrs. M is correct in assessing that you are doing supplanting rather than supplement. You should NOT be giving any grades - reading or social studies. I could see you having input (I rarely was asked about grades). We often wrote progress reports but never gave grades. I would be doing some research then ask for a sit down with your administrator and voice your concerns. If you are told to continue as you have been, document the meeting and do your best. I was often "asked" to do things I did not feel was correct. I documented and tried to be a team player. Good luck.
