How To Ruin the First Day of 5th Grade

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I just got my copy of The Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day of Fifth Grade and I am PUMPED about it! For the first assignment the SS complete, I want them to write a list of the top ten things they would like the class to know about them. Then I want to share my top ten list with the SS and have them share theirs. I am also thinking about writing a letter to parents titled "the top ten ways for your SS to have a successful year in 5th grade" or something like that.

Does anyone else have any ideas to use with this book? I am going to read it aloud during the first week and would love more activities to tie in with it!!

Thank you!

had to censor

I wanted to use this book too, the Letterman parts are funny, but there are so many parts I would have had to censor. It's a cute story line, but too inappropriate for me to use at my school for read aloud.

I used it to train the kids on how to do lit circles. Kids were broken up into smaller groups for discussion (not permanent groups) weekly. We would then check the questions I had made up to go with each chapter. I would give them the questions after I read a chapter to them so I might have done 4 or 5 chapters a week. They also had to do one of the lit circle jobs each week.

I read it aloud so that all the kids could participate w/ the same book.

The kids really enjoyed it. I didn't find anything that needed censoring.

what parts you would censor?

I read the book for the first time this summer and plan on using it as a read-aloud for my class. I found it funny and imaginative and not at all inappropriate. The main character does all kinds of things that 5th graders would love to do but dare not. I'm looking forward to seeing posts about how so many of you will incorporate into your class!

garverl--I was wondering the same thing. I also read it and found nothing to be inappropriate.

Yes, I too would like the questions you used for this book. I am new to teaching fifth grade this year and I have started to read it to my students.
