I got Offered a Job

A month or so ago I went to an interview that a family friend set up for a city district 1/2 hour away with multiple schools.

Today, I got a call from that same principal saying that they had a 2nd grade opening and want to hire me. I told her I was very interested and she said I will hear from personnel soon. This was 2.5 hours ago. No word from personnel yet.

Our family friend said in the meantime, call the principal and ask to see your classroom since school for teachers starts next Monday and students Wednesday.

What do you think? Would you wait to for personnel to call or call principal to see if you can come in and bring some supplies? Times ticking either way.

Congrats! Maybe give personnel a call? In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to call the principal and express how excited you are to begin and ask if you can come in soon after you hear from personnel (maybe the principal can light a fire under the butt of the HR staff!)

How exciting You could call the school and the sec. could probably give you that info. Here we can't let anyone into a room until they are board approved, and that means waiting until there is an actual board mtg! I remember that August so well ... Good luck this year!

When my P called me to offer me a job, he said Personnel would be in touch soon. It took about a week. Granted, that was still early summer and you are a last minute hire, so I'm sure they will be faster. In our district, the P has to put in to personnel that he wants X person and then they have to do final approval (which for us included a background check). I would wait until tomorrow to ask the principal about bringing in things and I'd give personnel a couple days.

Ask to see the classroom and NOT bring supplies yet? Maybe go in, check things out, take some pics, locate the workroom, restrooms, cafeteria, etc.

I wouldn't physically carry anything in until it is official.

Congrats! I'm more of an upper elementary person, but 2nd grade has also always sound fun to me! I bet you will enjoy it!

In the meantime, as hard as it is, you really need to have patience! Two and half hours is not that long of a time for personnel to call. They are extremely busy this time all year, especially this time of year! Be patient, you aren't the only one they hired nor their only employee. They will call, don't worry. Until then, I would not call the principal. However, once personnel calls you, then you could contact your principal via e-mail or phone acknowledging that personnel did call you, that you accepted, are looking forward to working there, and were wondering if you could come in to see your room, get to know people and the building, etc.

Thanks for the congrats. What a morning! I called the school and asked to see the classroom but the principal said 2 schools have shut down and therefore teachers are displaced. She made a recommendation to have me, and hopes to have me at her school, but doesn't know what will happen. She said I now have to just be patient.

Just my luck! If it's not meant to be, it's not.

Wait... shut down today? That is a lot of displaced teachers to place. Are there that many openings in the district?

I remember reading several of your posts that described your long journey to get a full time teaching job. I am so happy for you. I taught 2nd for many years and it was a great age for kids. Enjoy!

Why would the principal even call to recommend me if she knew this happened?

It's strange indeed that she would call and offer you a job and then claim a few hours later that it was only a recommendation and not a job offer for an existing opening. Strange situation indeed. Very strange.

Maybe you are on a stand by list

and she wanted you to be aware in case any of your references mentioned anything.

She may be just hedging her bets and having potential teachers lined up just in case until she knows her class lists.

When she called did she say: I am calling to offer you a job..?

Or did she ask if you were still interested in working for her?

That doesn't make any sense. Why would she offer you the job in the morning and then when you call her about seeing the room she says she just recommended you and many teachers are displaced?

Could you have heard...

Could you have heard what you wanted to hear and not what she was actually saying this morning? Obviously she was not calling to offer you a position this morning because she does not have one to offer right now. It does sound like she is hoping to have a place for you, but that is not what you heard. That stinks! Hopefully things work out for you if this is what you want!!

This morning she said she's recommending me for the position and personnel would be in touch. She told the VP who was next to her that I was able to take the position (as far as I remember her saying).

My family friend who also works in this district said once a principal wants you it's an offer because they have final say on who they want not superintendent. So, even he thought this was odd, and he tried to call her but didn't get ahold of her.

In meantime, a district I rather work for called me for an interview on Wed. for a K position. My friend works at another school in district so I'm hoping I get the job there. Fingers crossed!

Pink, I just don't understand this whole situation and I really don't understand how you always get in these complicated situations that don't make much sense

I hope everything works out but this all seems rather strange.

Eesh. I really hope this all works out for you. However, I strongly suggest that you NOT have your family friend call the principal in the future. Just wait it out. Patience is difficult, but having others call the principal seems like the wrong tactic. That said, maybe I misunderstood what you were saying.

Again, I hope it works out!
