Action Research Project for Gifted

Does anyone have any good suggestions for an action research project involving the gifted? I want to choose a topic in which I'll find a lot of journal articles and other resources. I was thinking of investigating "using technology to improve gifted students' appreciation of literature," but I've not found much out there as far as resources in this area.

Please, help.

A

I Want To Know Project

I have taught gifted for the last 8 years and for the last 5 years I have done this project called I Want To Know project. The focus is to teach them to write a research paper. I start off the beginning of the year with this because I want to see what my kids are interested in. Because I let them choose the subject, they are extremely motivated to do this project. I make them choose something they want to learn more about; not something they know already. Lets just say I have had some fantastic papers and projects. It is very comprehensive, but has been a big hit! I don't have enought posts to attach it yet (I have 15 posts to go), but if you want a copy, just e-mail me.

I just finished one on attitudes toward gifted students. There was a lot of literature on that topic.

Action Research Question for AC

AC,

Without knowing more about your specific situation it is difficult to suggest a topic. How do you work with GT students? Are you specifically looking at Language Arts and Technology for your research and at what grade level?

Considering your original idea, could you look at how technology might impact their communication of ideas concerning literature through the use of software that allows a variety of ways to express ideas?

In my position, I was thinking about doing something related to problem-based math lessons, cooperative groups and improving mathematical writing. I am also concerned about some of my students' abilities to interact socially. So something related to team building activities and their impact on social interactions might be a possibility.

I realize that I replied based on my own situation, but I hope something might spark a useful idea for you.

Thank you all for your speedy responses. Here's a bit more info. Sorry, but my son was calling me earlier, which cut me short. I teach gifted kids in grades 1-5 in all areas except math. I enrich what they're learning in the classroom in a pull out program. I differentiate according to gifts, talents, learning styles and interests. I use a lot of technology (powerpoints, claymation, digital photography, podcasts, i-movies, etc.) to allow students varied opportunities to express themselves in response to literature, science, social studies, etc.

I am going into my second year in gifted ed and simultaneously completing my masters. In this grad program they require you to decide on something that has concerned you in your classroom in terms of instruction, socialization, communication, etc. Then you "tweak" just one thing and document the resulting data over 6-8 weeks. You need to cite 25 different resources within your paper too. I've been on ASKEric and EBSCO and neither site seemed to offer much in terms of the gifted. However, I may be searching under the wrong terms.

Please, offer any additional guidance you can offer in terms of viable ideas for topics and where I can find resources for gifted research.

Thank you all so much!
