As I near the close of my first year in 5th grade, I am looking for ideas to finish the 'math' year with a performance assessment project that requires the students to use much of what they learned in 5th grade math. I have one idea--design and construction of a model baseball stadium--that uses lots of geometry(a long list of required shapes, angles, etc to be in design) , ratios (scale drawings) and multiplication (ticket pricing, revenue forecasts). However, i think i would be starting it too late to finish by June 7.

Anyone know of any other cumulative type projects the kids can do in teams.

End of year excitement, hot rooms, antsy pre-hormonal 11 year olds does not make the standard math text lessons very fun.

What about writing a Geometry Picture Book - or whatever Math topic you choose. There are many cute math picture books that you can read to your kids & then have them be creative and write their own.

In the past I have had my students make file folder games. I gave them the board track and they had to write the questions to go with it.

A summative math ABC book- For every letter of the alphabet they make a page with a term, definition, and picture from skills learned all year.

Probability Game Day- students work with a partner to create an original chance game and have a game day when all projects are completed

Shopping Catalog- cut out items to buy (you might pick a theme) and glue on display to create shopping list. Add total. Slash prices with certain percentages. Translate totals into decimals/fractions

my co-teacher is doing a math project with her class right now. In groups, the kids come up with a theme for a store to sell items. They bring in paper ads and cut out items for a store, and give each item a price. Then, they have to decide to have a sale in their store, and determine a percentage that will be taken off of each item (and it can't be something easy!). For a Language Arts connection, they have to create an advertisement for the store (either print or television commercial). They're going to use paper money and write checks to "buy" items.

The kids really seem to like it, and I'm sure that there's a lot more that they could do with it, even designing the layout of the store to fit the geometry in
