Who writes this stuff?

I was with fifth graders a couple days ago, and had to go through some worksheets with the class that weren't created by the teacher. The students had to answer questions about informational texts, and identify main ideas. The writing was confusing. The paragraphs were poorly-written. Trying to identify main ideas was a frustrating exercise. My college writing professors would have been horrified.

A couple years ago, I had to go through an informational packet with a class (again, not created by the teacher) that was atrocious. The paragraphs were terrible, and much of the information was incorrect. The author wanted the students to answer a question with information that was just plain wrong.

I'd love to know who writes this stuff!

The fifth graders were supposed to summarize a five patagraph paper. They would not cooperate. Wanting them to at least do something, i told them to write the first sentence of each Paragraph in a paragraph and that was their summary.

They still ignored me though, and wouldn't do anything. Sigh....

I had a writing prompt recently about how global warming was causing a particular species of penguin to die off due to melting ice packs...

a quick Google search showed multiple legitimate sites proclaiming that populations of the mentioned penguin are up 90% since the 1970s due to greatly increased ice packs. (and satellite imaging that wasn't available in the 70s that proved more colonies)

I'd like to know who writes that stuff too.

Several years ago I was expected to test my first graders for fluency and comprehension every three weeks. The comprehension section had only three questions so if a student missed even one of the questions he or she failed the comprehension component.
One of the questions required the student to make an inference, but there was no information in the reading which would allow the student to make any kind of inference. Naturally all of the students failed. I went to several other teachers and asked them if they could show me how this inference could be made. I even went to my reading specialist. She couldn't do it either. I finally called the company and expressed my concern. One of the authors couldn't help me and just told me not to worry about it. However, this flawed document was used to measure the students progress and my effectiveness.
