Pumpkin Life Cycle Unit

Live and learn.

One of the trials of teaching a hands-on pumpkin life cycle unit: we filled the cavity of a pumpkin with soil and watered it, so the seeds within would sprout. Which they did...but the pumpkin started rotting HORRIBLY (maybe because the heat was broken at school and it was in the 80s in my room?)

So, I told the kids we had to throw it out. One kiddo has obviously been paying attention because he asked "But won't that end its life cycle?" Uh, yeah...it will. Okay, Plan B! Let's deposit it in a fellow teacher's class garden plot and see what happens!

Carrying 40 some pounds (I didn't weigh it, but it FELT like 40#!) of leaky, stanky pumpkin up to her portable had me dry heaving. And then, when transferring it to the earth, I nearly puked on her in front of my kids and her's. But Pumpkin Jack is now in place and ready for the next stage.

Lesson? Move the pumpkin out BEFORE it is more liquid than solid.

Ew - I can just imagine that trek! I've thought about doing that but wondered about rotting. If we carve jack-o-lanterns they only last a few days before they start.

And I had to carry it away from me so I didn't get splashed by the vile liquid.

I did a pie pumpkin, too, so the kids can make predictions, etc. The little one is going strong so far.
