i have a friend who is thinking of moving out of state because of lack of jobs. unfortunately, it seems as if there are budget cuts all over the us. if anyone knows, can you tell me what states have the best availibility of jobs for reading specialists. if the cuts are that bad in your states, can you tell me how bad they are and what you, as a teacher, are doing about it (are you looking elsewhere, leaving teaching all together, ect).

If you search out the right areas. In and around Ft. Worth right now business is booming. We are building a new elementary next year as are many of the districts around us.

My suggestion would be don't limit yourself to "reading specialist" and take what you can get. In my district, more often than not, "specialists" are hired from within the district - not from outside. Consider you may have to do time in a classroom in order to get to the specialist position you want.

I know many just out of college teachers who have no hope for a job. I know a lot of teachers who were pink slipped and have been told there will be no place for them in district this next year. I know reading specialists who are taking regular classroom jobs just to be working....don't come here if you are looking for streets paved of gold.

We are losing 10 teachers at our school this year. It's a mix, 2 were on TERI (a retirement program), several jobs were cut to part time, lost our computer teacher altogether and also our teacher coach has been cut, guidance part time, we don't have a reading specialist. Most can find jobs at other less desirable schools. The population in our particular area continues to grow, but more slowly than other areas (lots go to private schools), so our numbers are down too. Most of us are happy to have a job, not a very inspiring situation.

my friend is also certified as a special ed teacher, but she is having a hard time finding anything. she thinks because she is from out-of-state. she has been told by the places/states she has applied too, that they need to make sure that there is room from her in the budget, or that they have to place senority teachers first.

We had budget cuts here too. A good number of people in the school system I work in lost their job. Thankfully no one in my school did.
