Pledge

Hello all, I am a four-year-old kindergarten teacher. It came up in discussion with a principal why I didn't do the pledge with the 4K students. It is not that I am unpatriotic or that I don't want the students to show respect, I am just feeling that this is not appropriate for 4 year olds.
Our state has mandated that from 5K up it must be said everyday. Students are expected to participate unless of religious or personal convictions.
Am I way off base here? Do childcare centers do the pledge with 4 year olds?

I likewise teach PreK and we say the pledge everyday! It is also part of our end of the year graduation ceremony. I think it only helps them be a little more prepared for Kindergarten as all public/state schools in our area require the children to say the pledge every morning in school.

I do not have my PreK kids begin to say the pledge until after Christmas. I tell them that we are getting ready for Kindergarten and if nothing else they stand up and place a hand over their heart while listening to it over the PA. I personally agree with ateacch and feel that it is a somewhat abstract idea for them to grasp but I do like the idea of making a "flag holder" job. That would make it more fun.

We do it everyday, starting on the first day, in my Pre-K. Flag holder is one of the favorite jobs in our classroom. I also stand in front of the kids, but the same direction as them, as I tell them I am holding up my right hand, and then putting my right hand on my heart. I find that they all learn which is their right hand easily from this repetition.

We also say the pledge along with singing The Star Spangled Banner. The children do a great job and are proud knowing both.

I teach pre-k and we do the US Pledge and the Texas Pledge. I feel it is importat for them to be respectful of their country/state. It is also part of the daily state curriculum and is required in ALL schools.

I teach 4-5 years olds at a daycare and all ages say the pledge! One student says it over the intercom each day and the 3 year olds never cease to amaze me! Kids really are like sponges they learn so quick! I like the idea of flag holder! Thanks!!

I have taught preschool for many years and saying the pledge has always been a part of our circle time. At the beginning of the year, I explain to them that we say the pledge out of respect for our country and to the people who fight for our freedom. They learn to stand up straight and put their right hand over their heart and that it is not a time to be silly. I don't think they are too young to learn respect for the flag and our country.
