Hi,
I am currently taking some ESL courses to become a program specialist. I've also subbed a few times for ESL teachers in the elementary schools.

I'd like to hear from ESL teachers what motivates you to want to teach ESL. Why do you think this kind of instruction is important. I'd like to hear it in your own words beyond the obvious. Is there something about the multicultural aspect that attracts you? What do you find satisfying about it?

1. I get to teach language all day. I've always been drawn to language learning and teaching. I got an undergraduate degree in French and also studied Spanish, Italian, and German while I was in college. Later, I got my license to teach elementary students, then I went on to get a Master of Reading degree. I've now taught students in grades K-12 in the areas of elementary education, reading education, and Spanish and French education.
Currently, I'm licensed in the state of North Carolina in French, Spanish, Reading, Elementary Education, and ESL.

2. This type of instruction is important because we need to make sure that all students have the same opportunities in school and in life as their English counterparts. While languages other than English are spoken in the United States, English remains the dominant language, and for students to successfully become part of the mainstream of our society, they need to learn English.

3. I had not considered the multicultural aspect before, but now that I am teaching ESL, it is fascinating to me. I am now curious about all things from the students' home country. Many of my students come from Spanish speaking countries, but I do have some from Africa and Haiti, and they speak French. This has encouraged me to practice French.

4. What is satisfying about it? I find it satisfying that my newcomers are "arriving." They are fitting in well now and understand our school culture, having been in the country for a few months. When I talk with them now, the lightbulb seems to be working. They are definitely comprehending so much more, and I feel gratified that I have been a part of that.

I love the students! They are so eager to learn and I never have behavior problems! I love having students from so many different places. I get excited when I get a student from a country I don't have one from. It is so interesting. I love teaching small groups every day. I get to see more so much progress because I have the students for several years. I get very attached to my students some I've had for 3 years now.

Being new to the teaching environment ( having recently retired from the construction industry), I greatly appreciate your posting in regards to 'Why teach'.
Clearly an inspiration for me.
I have made many friends in India; Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. It is my intention to return to teach ESL.
