But some of us may be on a luxury liner and some of us in a dingy! In any case we are all suffering from fiscal woes. We have less $ to spend on our classes, our parents can donate less and our schools have less $....SO....what free or cheap rewards do you give? Let's make a list. I am always looking for free and/or cheap rewards that fifth graders enjoy. It has been a while since I had a class that cared anything about Happy Meal Toys, so ...let's think...here are some of mine.....
Oh, and I forgot, we can't really do anything edible which really cut my list down. The favorite used to be a Coke for 15 AR points!

Free....
Teachers chair for the day.....I actually have 2!
computer time
homework pass
cursive pass
Little kid help pass

Cheap......
Do-dads from target $ stop
Gum ball
pencils
stickers...though it has been while since they cared for these

Teachers in my grade had been giving away $10 Border's gift cards for kids who hit 150 AR points and I knew it had gotten out of hand, so I changed it for 5th grade (I'm the reading teacher). Here's what I did:

15 points - candy treat
25 points - special pencil (bought 144 of them from Oriental Trading for $13)
50 points - homework pass
75 points - gel pen (bought 84 of them in a nice holder from Costco for $18)
100 points - eat with a friend (we have assigned cafeteria seating)
150 points - earn an extra recess for the whole class

I like the extra recess one because it helps those kids who might be the shier ones get noticed by their peers.

Cost Free Rewards

Clip to ScrapBook #5

We do "bucks" in the 5th grade and students earn them by having good behavior and being responsible.

Some of the things they spend them on that are cheap or free:

*pencils
*pencil top erasers
*stickers (yep, they still love these in 5th!)
*1st to be in line (we rotate classes at our grade level)
*choice of seating (you have to be careful though, that they don't choose to sit near someone they can get in trouble with)
*sitting at the reading area (we have comfy chairs there)
*homework pass and reduced work pass
*computer time (I will admit, though, when testing time comes, free computer time for them is lessened).

Students also spend their bucks at a Market Day. This is not really low cost, but at the end of every grading term, students sell products they have created (simple crafts, such as bookmarks, drawings, jewelry, etc). For this one, we do need parent contributions. If we have crafty stuff in the class, then students can use that to create.

I am also on the lookout for more ideas, so I hope more people share them!

I am so glad to be a member of PT. I have learned so much from all of you.

These no cost rewards are great. I think my kids will like them, especially the no homework passes.

Sitting in the teacher's chair was the top choice by my class last year--who knew this would be such a high stakes item?!?

Priviledge Pass

One of my students suggested this idea. It's a pass that entitle the student to several priviledges for a day. In our room, it included swapping his/her class job, skipping to the front of the water fountain line, and claiming the entire futon during read aloud. They LOVED it!

I love the idea of earning more recess time for the entire class. Hands down that will be the favorite in my classroom this year.

Don't forget to hit up all the places in your area that donate free stuff - pizza places that give out individual pizza certificates, ice cone certificates, hamburger certificates, etc.

and hands down my kids favorite coupon was eating lunch with teacher (I provided drink/ice cream treat). We either hung out in room (they got to choose another student to come), watched a movie/chatted or we sat at picnic tables. There were WEEKS that I did not eat by myself! This year, we might tweak it,so all coupons won will be done on one day of the week. I enjoyed getting to know my kids on a more personal level (family, pets, trips, hobbies..)

5th graders love to eat lunch in the classroom with their teacher---free and easy...just have to give up part of my lunch time, but they just LOVE it!

Lunch and a movie- Students eat in the classroom with the teacher and get to watch a movie. My kids loved Magic School bus and School house rock.

Extra recess- 15 minutes extra recess as a class

Read in- Students get to bring a pillow and stuffed friend and we have a 45 min. read in at the end of the day.

PJ Day- Students can wear PJ's to school.

Game Afternoon- Students can play board games for 30-40 min. at the end of a day.
