Do any of you send a letter in the mail to your 5th grade students before school starts? Just like a welcome back to school one?

I used to send a postcard when I taught 5th grade. It was easy because I wrote them all out ahead of time (except for the name) and then finished them when I got my class list.

Unfortunately, now they give us the list a day before the kids get there, so it's not early enough.

Nope... I would love to send a little postcard to them, but we don't get our class list until about an hour before Sneak-A-Peek (usually the day before students return).

I am going to send a little letter to last year's students, though, to wish them lots of luck in the next year. I will also send a little postcard to them during or after the first week of school.

I just put a letter in the mail today along with a supply list. I am hoping this will get them excited about returning to school.

I wish I could, but we don't get our official class lists until a few days before classes start. ;(

I write one

I write a letter to my students to have on their desks when they arrive. We don't get our lists in time to mail them and I won't have addresses until the info cards go home to get filled out. I have a little letter telling them a bit about myself and then I get them to write a letter to me. The letter from me gets pasted on the first page of their scrapbooks. I also had my last years students write a welcome letter to the new grade fives. The children will get these on the first day to. I love how they warn them that long division is hard and I do math everyday!! HAHA!!

I also write a little note to my students every Friday, the Friday note. I really try to focus on the positive things they have done during the week and sometimes sneek in notes for improvement for the next week. At the end of the year I write them on fancy paper and they put it as the last page in their scrapbooks. They also write me a letter then telling me what they thought of the year.

They really do. Unless they haven't had a good week, then they are always wondering what I'm going to write. No matter what they did I always make it positive, for example: "I hope you enjoyed the math centres we did this week Billy. I know you found it difficult to work with some of the individuals in your group, but I know that you tried hard. You are a wonderful student with great potential Billy. Keep working hard and always do your best. Happy Friday!"

I do send a letter every year. In the letter I tell the kids some of the highlights of what we will be doing that year. I also invite them to "Meet the Teacher" night. I tell them how excited I am to have them in my class. Hope this helps.

I did that once...when I was very upset with the class. I wrote about how frustrated I was with their behaviour, how it was causing them to lose lesson time which I could use to conduct engaging activities, etc.
