Please share what you do to communicate with families who are from somewhere like The Ukraine or a province in China. I know the Spanish speaking families are much more common, but there are students with families from other places, and I'm just wondering what tools other teachers use. TIA

letters
form letters (yahoo babelfish translate can be helpful)
student help
phone calls (when translator for the languages I don't know is available)
website (when i remember, unfortunately)
newsletters

I only know Spanish, but have been asked to help out with children from China, one from Russia, and three from Togo who all knew English by the time they got to these grade levels but whose parents do not.

Our ESl department has translators for letters, conversations, etc. We just have to request them and even email or fax them an item. I find that I need to talk with my ESL parents face to face since body language and physical items help to get ppoints accross.
