Did anyone in Texas have any non-passers in 5th grade? What are you doing this week to tutor or reteach before the test next week? I am being sent out to a 5th grade class tomorrow to help with reading all week. Just wondering if there was anything in particular that you have used in the past that has worked one week before? Thanks

Our school is intense in dealing with the borderline kids or nonpassers from 4th grade. We have been pulling small groups throughout the day and after school since the fall. Right now we have 6 nonpassers in reading and 4 in math out of a total of 85 students. These kids are being pulled 3 times a day for 45 minutes each time for intensive practice in decoding/ understanding both questions and the passage for reading. (Same schedule for math, but different work.) The first session in the day is with me, the second with the reading specialist, and the third with our assistant principal who used to be a reading specialist. We've taught certain strategies to our kids school-wide. You can find these at

I don't think you have to be on our district's intranet to access these pages. Maybe they can help in some way. I really like the strategy for connecting across texts. Let me know if you can't see them and I'll try to get them to you.

The passages we use for practice come from many sources, but two that I can name right off hand are Motivation Reading and Keep on Reading.
