Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hello! I teach Kindergarten, but for my Masters in Reading I have to work with a fifth grade student who is struggling in reading. I was looking for some tips for making the most of my time with her (only 30 minutes a week). She is ESOL and her biggest struggle is in comprehension. I appreaciate any lesson ideas or activities that you guys could share!!!

For my struggling ESL students I have them practise reading comprehension strategies orally first then we write down those key things we discussed in order to write a response. I focus on oral language first then scribing and then they write on their own. Also a lot of teh issues with comprehension is from fluency and they should work on word recongistion skills. Hope this helps.

Using some high interest books which would appeal for older struggling readers??? I would suggest something along the lines of the Wimpy Kid books or since it is a girl you are working with you could even look into the Dear Diary books.....
