not too sure what your loking for but what I do is I follow Lucy Calkins writing workshop. She has the students write for about forty minutes about their life stories and she uses them to make essays, how do books, reports, narratives, etc. Its a good way to write.

I used the units of study in first grade but never the notebook as a tool. I'll have to check out the intermediate units of study.

I LOVE my writer's notebook!! First off, I also LOVE to write, so I actually show my students my REAL writer's notebook, and they usually model what I have in mine.

I kind of follow Ralph Fletcher's Notebook Know How, but I get rid of the fluff, and only teach what I REALLY use as a writer.

I divide my notebook into sections. They are.

Really cool quotes or sentences that I've heard

Character profiles

Really cool words

Life's observances (they LOVE this section!!)

10 best lists (They also love this section)

Practice section (This is where i write down prompts for them to do a quick write, or a schedule that they have to fill out from the day before...example they have to number their page from 1-10. On the 10 lines, they need to write down what they did or saw that was interesting that day...
1. Woke up to rain running down the window
2. Ate breakfast
3. Looked everywhere and couldn't find my car keys
4. Saw a car on the side of the road in the ditch with a policeman opening the door
5. Saw 2 students crying in the hall
6. Fire Drill
7. Olivia got a new hair cut
8. Lindsay is absent
9. Yummy burgers and fries for lunch
10 art class doing papier mache

The next day, they have to randomly pick a number from 1 to 10, I sometimes have a partner pick a number too. They need to open their notebook, and write a whole page about the number they chose. EX.
7 Olivia got a new hair cut...They could write a story from Olivia's point of view about her not wanting her hair cut, but had to for a punishment, and then go on with a whole little story. It's actually a lot of fun, and my students love doing it. The more they do this exercise, the more observant they become, because they know they have to write something the next day.

Hope this helps!!

Some years, I also have them use a section to write the very first sentence of their favorite books.

Hope that helps!!

I knew that my writer's notebooks were missing something-love your sections. I will work on mine this summer so that I will have a new EXCITING notebook to share next year.

I was looking at the Ralph Fletcher book you mentioned. Any other professional resources you think I would need?

I love your notebook ideas. (It makes 5th grade sound fun.) Do you have the students write realistic fiction or memoir or both?

Does your school use Reading workshop also?

Thanks so much for your ideas.

I love the idea of sectioning out the notebooks! It is always so difficult to find things in my students' notebooks! Great idea!!!

I really love this idea for a writer's notebook. I have used journal writing at the beginning of class so it's about time to mix it up. A lot of great ideas.
