So my classroom has NO center materials let alone materials at all. I have been given $600 to spend on my classroom. I am hunting for every bargain around so I can make the most out of my $600. I would like to ask you what items would you purchase if you were given $600. I am even thinking of purchasing some computer programs. So far this is what I will be purchasing:

Leapster Tag system with books
1 set of Geoboards
8 MagnaDoodles (I have 15 students and I like them to work in pairs on them)
A new set of blocks
Teddy Bear counters
Puppets (Found a set of 12 on oriental trading)
Play Cash Register
Community Workers dress up clothes (oriental trading)

What else would you get? I am having a mental block because I am so EXCITED!

I would suggest garage sales, you'll probably find great deals.
Maybe instead of getting 8 magnadoodles, you can only get 3, then get a few white boards, magnetic letters (use on cookie sheets), and this will keep the kids from being bored with JUST magnadoodles (they can rotate) and you'll also save $$$

I agree with sipping tea about the magna doodles. Kindergartners LOVE whiteboards, so I would definitely trade some of the magnas for whiteboards. Pattern blocks are a must, unifix cubes are very handy, and lots of books for sure. Check craigslist, garage sales, library sales, ebay (search for "lot of kids books"). Puzzles...also try to see if you can get them used.

I personally wouldn't spend too much money on computer programs. If you have internet access the kids can use starfall for free.

How about some lacing cards? Those have been a hit with my K students. Also, lego (but try to get it used....and you can wait on it, because I've found that K's tend to only get into lego in the second half of the year for whatever reason).

How about a teaching easel? Do you have that? Do you have a calendar already? Paint easel? Paint cups and brushes?

My kids all have whiteboards. They come with our reading program. I also have an easel and calendar stuff and lots of books. We are REALLY lacking for center materials and manipulatives.

Check out Lakeshore. They have some wonderful premade centers. I recieved a $500 grant this year and spent all of it at Lakshore and I purchased a lot of premade centers. I called them and asked for free shipping because I was making such a big order and they gave it to me.

Do you have a kitchen/house center? Even if you don't have the money to buy a fancy wooden kitchen, maybe you could buy some of the toy plates and utensils and food....

Other center stuff: playdough and cutters, rolling pins, placemats to play with play dough on, dolls and doll clothes, maybe some science things like magnifying glasses, etc.
